If you really would like to make your t-shirts stand out from those of your competitors, you should differentiate your products from theirs. I suggest that you consider working on the labels for your t-shirts to make a statement. This article can help you here because it will give you tips with these labels.
How do you design a t-shirt label, hang tags, woven labels, and neck tags? Design your labels the way you want to project your brand image to your customer. Look at your competitors for inspiration as a template and add in your own company logos and info. Information that is required by regulatory agencies will also have to be written here.
Let me begin first by discussing what is the necessary information that is required to be included.
Contents On A T-Shirt Label

The following information should be included in these labels:
- Brand or company name
- Size of the garment
- Composition of fabric
- Manufacturing country origin
- Care instructions for fabric
- RN number
This information should be easily gathered.
I suggest that you include your company or its brand logo along with the name.
This reinforces your image further to your customers. Having a brand label that can be seen externally from the t-shirt will increase awareness and perception of the quality of this t-shirt.
The size of the t-shirt lets people know right away if this will fit them. This will save a lot of hassle for your customers.
The composition of the fabric is important so that you can reassure consumers that they will be wearing a quality item. If you are using an organic or an eco-friendly fabric, this will be a good place to say it so for you will no doubt attract a lot of socially conscious customers. You will be especially reminding them of the impact of this purchase on the environment.
Fabric composition will also have a direct effect on care instructions. The information here can also justify the cost of your t-shirts if presented properly. You will also address the needs of customers who prefer to know the true composition of the t-shirt fabric because it may have an effect on their bodies.
Country of origin is also important to people who may prefer American made t-shirts. This helps them decide right away.
Care instructions let your customers know how to properly take care of their t-shirts. This will make your product last longer and lead to more satisfied customers. You should try to include information on how to wash, bleach, dry, and iron, if applicable, on this label.
RN number, which means registered identification number, is a code that is issued by the FTC or the Federal Trade Commission as requested by a business located in the USA. The same business is involved in the importing, manufacturing, distribution, or sale of fur, textile, wool, and other related products.
Although this RN number is not really required, you can choose to use this in the label instead of your company or brand name.
If you currently have a partnership or a collaboration with another company, you may also like to indicate their name on this label. This will help you in terms of added sales and marketing efforts especially if this partner company is popular and famous.
I will now proceed to discuss the different options you have for your t-shirts.
Hang Tags For Your T-Shirt
I would definitely suggest that you should design these clothing hang tags, if you will be using them, with your customer’s persona in mind.
A key consideration here is what particular design layout could properly represent your brand. If your brand is targeted for the fitness crowd, you should have sporty themes incorporated in your custom clothing tags shaped like an athletic shoe cut. There should be an image fit between the hang tags and your brand.
Try to stick with just using at the maximum, two custom clothing tags. The other hang tag, if you will consider using, should belong to the t-shirt manufacturer. If you are not required to have this, then just have one hang tag for this will be enough.
You can put additional information in these clothing hang tags.
Interesting customer tips and educational information printed on them will make it worthwhile for your client to read. However, do not overdo this for there may be instances of information overload. Keep it simple.
There are other uses for clothing hang tags aside from providing clothing information.
They can serve as a business card. You can include your contact information like your website, social media accounts such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, and even your location address and phone numbers. Your customers can easily use this as their connection to your brand for future use.
Consider having them laid out like coupons. You can indicate discounts and promotions in them so that this will make it more attractive for your loyal buyers to patronize your t-shirts again.
Woven Brand Label
Woven labels are the most commonly used type of t-shirt label. The reason is because of their relatively cheaper cost compared to other types.
They are usually sewn on although there are iron-on clothing labels that are cheaper but are not so durable. However. there are mask type labels which are of better quality but obviously, are more expensive.
Using woven labels has its advantages compared to using a printed t-shirt label aside from the cost.
You can definitely place these iron-on clothing labels on the exterior side of your t-shirts like the outside hem of its sleeve or bottom. There are also more options in terms of the color used for the background image.
However, a woven label cannot show small details compared to the printed label.
Neck Tags On Your T-Shirt
You should definitely use ink that will not show through at the t-shirt’s backside, especially if the t-shirt is light-colored. I suggest you choose from black, gray, or white but this should not prevent you from coming up with your own custom color. Whatever color you will choose should be always easily readable.
Limit the size to 4” x 4” and the smallest allowable type size is the 6 point one. Anything smaller will be very hard to read.
Since all the t-shirts you get from your manufacturer come with its own production clothing tags, I suggest that you remove them.
This type of label is also good for your customers who do not like to be irritated by any fabric that is sticking out and touching their skin.
You should not use this type of label if your t-shirts are on the pricey side because this may cheapen its image.
There are two types for this type of tag: sewn-in labels or tear-away clothing tags. You will need a sewing machine to take out the sewn-in tag type. Tear-away tags can be removed by holding on the lower edge of the tag and pulling it from one side to another.
Using Multiple T-Shirt Labels
This will be up to you if you have a preference to use more than one t-shirt label. What is important here is that these labels would support your brand image that you are consciously trying to project.
Each type of label discussed earlier has its own respective application. You may consider using them based on the information you are trying to share with your customers.
You may consider a label just containing the product care and fabric composition information and a separate one just for the brand information. This is so especially if you really prefer to have this particular label share your contact details or have promotions written.
The locations as to where you will be placing these same labels would also have an impact if you decide to have more than one.
Location Of T-Shirt Label
Aside from the common label placement on the inside collar, you have options here. You can keep the care information here along with the size and fabric content.
I suggest that you have the company or brand label be situated at the back of the t-shirt, at the hem, or at the sleeve side. This will make your t-shirt classier.
Please consider the cut and fold of your chosen labels in terms of where you will be actually placing them on the t-shirt. You can also use this guide as to the information you will need to be indicated.
Center Fold Label
Usually, this is a woven label placed inside the collar of the t-shirt. The company and brand name are written on one side and the fabric information and care are on the other side.
A variation of this type if the Manhattan one where there is an additional fold at the top. It sets out a more finished look.
End Fold Label
This has the finished look as both sides are tucked. You have the choice of placing inside our outside the t-shirt.
Consider the size of this label type in the information you will be sharing since there is not a lot here. Limit it to company or brand name, if possible.
The Mitre type is a variation of the end fold label. However, the tag is suspended hanging further down a little bit here instead of coming across. Use this solely for branding information for space here is not plenty.
Straight Cut Label
This label type needs all sides and corners to be sewn in flat since it has no folds.
Normally, this is placed outside the t-shirt to make it look like a patch. It projects a stylish image so it would be best to have your brand or logo placed here.
Loop Fold Label
This is also situated on the t-shirt inside either on the left or right-hand side of the seam and closer to the hem itself. They are placed furthest so they tend to be out of sight. Because of its relatively large size, you can have more information here such as fabric care and composition.
